Vonyarcvashegy
is a popular holiday resort among the Hungarian and foreignguests.
The habitation was built on the southern slopes of the Keszthelyi-mountains
by lake Balaton. You can find peasant houses with modern villas
on the slopes covered with woods, vineyards and orchards. Wine-production
has an important tradition.
One
of the sights in Vonyarcvashegy is Saint. Michael-hill(Szent
Mihály Domb). The 134 metre-high dolomite hill rises above the
40-acre-large marsh-meadow like an island. In 1739 near this
small hill 46 fishermen found themselves in fatal danger on
the frozen ice of Balaton. Miraculously 40 of them escaped.
They made a vow to build a chapel on the hill. From the top
of the hill you can have a wonderful panorama even on the other
shore. On the right the bay of Keszthely, on the left the volcanic
mountain of Badacsony with the bay of Szigliget rouse admiration.
Our
village joined vathing life in 1960. Now two thirds of the houses
in Vonyarcvashegy are summer residences, the number of permanent
inhabitants is about 1800. During the summer season nearly forty
restaurants and shops, and several thousands of accomodation
(mainly house and private accomodation) await the guests.
The beach of Vonyarcvashegy is one of the most popular beaches
of
the highest standard in its surroundings. It has a sandy part, ideal
for
small children. You can also find more than 15 buffets, some
gift-shops
and boutiques, surf school and rent, rent for boats and pedal
boats,
giant water slide, playground for children and football ground.
Hopefully
before the season begins a pool for children and the water ski-track
will be ready. You can also have the opportunity to play tennis,
mini-golf, to cycle and to do fishing. With the help of route
signs you
can wander all over the woods in the neighbourhood and you can
enjoy
the panorama of Balaton.
The young and everybody who needs entertainment can enjoy
themselves at the discos or amusement places with dancing in
the
vicinity. Full programmes, traditional wine-days, feasts, exhibitions,
classical and popular music programmes await our guests.
In
winter the willage id quiet and calm but life
does not stop. Some restaurants and shops are open all the year
round, providing the basic supply. At this time of the year
our guests enjoy stillness and usually try to make the most
of the local opportunities.
For instance the warm,
medicinal waters of thermal spas (Hévíz, Zalakaros and Kehidakustány
open all the year round), or they may take shorter or longer
trips to
know the towns and their sights in the region. Balaton usually
fruzes over in winter and many cheerful children and adults
come to skate on the ice.
While
sipping some quality wine of the region, our guestr will certainly
realize that it is worth returning to this wonderful place again
and again.
